A major Stansted Airport fire has resulted in the suspension of all flights this morning, Wednesday, September 24, 2025, after a blaze broke out in the main departure lounge. The terminal was immediately evacuated as emergency services rushed to the scene. Thick smoke was seen billowing from a section of the terminal building, causing widespread disruption for thousands of passengers. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they are on-site and tackling the incident. Airport officials have issued a statement advising all passengers not to travel to the airport until further notice.
Emergency Response and Current Situation
The alarm was raised at approximately 8:15 AM local time. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service dispatched eight crews to the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the smoke-filled departure lounge to battle the blaze.
As of 10:30 AM, an official from the fire service confirmed that the fire is now under control. While there have been no reports of serious injuries, paramedics are treating a small number of people for smoke inhalation.
“Our crews worked quickly and professionally to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading,” said Station Manager David Wilson. “The airport’s evacuation protocols were executed effectively, ensuring passenger safety, which is our number one priority. A full investigation into the cause of the fire will begin as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Widespread Disruption for Travelers
The Stansted Airport fire has caused a complete halt to operations at one of the UK’s busiest airports. All departing and arriving flights have been suspended indefinitely, with images on social media showing large crowds of evacuated passengers waiting outside the terminal buildings.
An airport spokesperson released a statement: “Due to a fire in our main terminal, all flights are currently suspended. We are working closely with the emergency services and our airline partners to manage the situation. The safety of our passengers and staff is paramount. We advise all passengers to check with their airline for the latest information on their flight status and not to travel to the airport at this time.”
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the alarms sounded. “It was quite scary,” one passenger told reporters. “The smoke started filling the lounge very quickly. Staff were shouting for everyone to get out. They did a great job getting everyone away from the danger.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
